12/1/1893 - 9/23/1905 Head Keeper Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station near Daytona Beach, FL, formerly known a Mosquito Inlet Light Papa was the keeper when the author Stephen Crane and others were saved by the lighthouse keepers after they were shipwrecked on Jan. 1, 1897. Crane wrote his famous short story, Open Boat, based on this experience. In 1927, the name of Mosquito Inlet was changed to Ponce De Leon Inlet. |
