Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station near Daytona Beach, FL, formerly known a Mosquito Inlet Light

Papa was the keeper when the author Stephen Crane and others were saved by the lighthouse keepers after they were shipwrecked on Jan. 1, 1897. Crane wrote his famous short story, Open Boat, based on this experience.

In 1927, the name of Mosquito Inlet was changed to Ponce De Leon Inlet.

The Coast Guard began to maintain the country's aids to maritime navigation, including operating the nation's lighthouses, when President Franklin Roosevelt ordered the transfer of the Lighthouse Service to the Coast Guard in 1939.
