Schuppe Family

My great grandmother Julia Catherine Schuppe b. Dec. 11, 1866, Smithville, NC, d. May 12, 1915, Fernandina Beach, FL.

Married Thomas Patrick O'Hagan on Feb. 24, 1886, at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church (now Stella Maris) on Sullivan's Island, SC. They had 12 children, Their third child was my grandmother Irene Elizabeth O'Hagan Ball.

Note from Aunt Irene: Grandfather met Julia in Charleston, SC. She had loved horseback riding at boarding school, so Thomas bought her a horse to ride on Morris Island, where they were first stationed.

Charlotte Moreno Schuppe McDermott

Julia's mother Charlotte Moreno born in1844 in Mexico which was shortly before the Mexican American War 1846-1848.  She was a 16 year old "servant" living at Fort Brown, Garrison, Brownsville, Texas in 1860.  (see 1860 Census below.) She had 3 children: son "George" born in Kentucky in 1865; "Julia" (my great grandmother) born in North Carolina in 1866; and "Mary" born in Kentucky in 1867.

Ft. Brown, Brownsville, Texas

In 1845, the U.S. Army began construction of a new fort (then known as "Fort Texas") on the northern side of the Rio Grande River. The next year, the fort played a role during the opening of the Mexican-American War. During the Siege of Fort Texas, two Americans were killed, including Major Jacob Brown. In honor of the fallen major, General Zachary Taylor renamed the post Fort Brown. In 1849, the city of Brownsville, Texas, was established not far from the fort's grounds.

After the Mexican-American War, life at the new Fort Brown was less eventful, but at times still perilous. Soldiers in the late 1840s and the 1850s occasionally rode out on patrols to hunt cattle thieves and bandits, but for the most part their existence was taken up with drudgery. The frontier post, built primarily from wood scavenged from the Point Isabel supply depot, was decidedly rustic.
Did Charlotte meet Schuppe at Fort Brown, Texas? I've never heard anything about Julia's 2 siblings. Did they survive to adulthood? I have only heard of Julia's 2 McDermott stepbrothers; one was named George.

Charlotte Moreno Schuppe, Julia's mother married Hugh McDermott in 1870 or 1869 and after Shuppe died in 1869. Hugh McDermott was the Superintendent of Fort Caswell in 1880. McDermott was a widower with 2 sons. George McDermott was the name of one son. Charlotte received a widow's pension in 1885 for her husband, Hugh McDermott (alias Hubert McDermott) for his service in the Civil War.

Charlotte McDermott gave her daughter Julia O'Hagan a family Bible when Julia moved to Georgetown Lighthouse. Today the bible is with Jimmy O'Hagan in Fernandina.

Bishweiler is located 5 miles WNW from the German border and the Rhine River, and 14 miles NE of Strasbourg.
